The area's unemployment rate has been consistently lower than the national average. The average unemployment rate for Harvey County in 2000 was 3.3%. Continuous news of new development translates to increased employment opportunities for Newton area residents. Over 300,000 square feet of industrial space has been occupied by new manufacturers since 1990.

Approximately 68% of the present county work force is local residents with the balance being inbound commuters. Some 2,500 Harvey County residents commute to work in the Wichita area.
