USD 373 serves more than 3,500 students in the Newton area which includes Newton, North Newton, Walton and surrounding rural areas. Annually, Newton High School graduates classes averaging about 400. The recent passage of a school bond issue supported the construction of an elementary school and significant renovation to 10 other buildings in the district. The bond issue was passed by the district's voters in the fall of 1995 by a 24% margin. This strong support for public schools indicates the community's commitment to provide the best possible future for the youth of the area. The district has a reputation for a high level of community support and parent involvement as well as a highly qualified teaching staff. Over 60% of the district's teachers hold advanced degrees. The district encourages participation in statewide speech, debate, music, drama, and fine arts programs and also offers a comprehensive vocational-technical education program. Elementary school classrooms currently are limited to 25 students to ensure quality, individualized instruction.
Two private/parochial schools in Newton also offer excellent educational opportunities as an alternative to public education. In addition to the primary and secondary education programs, the Newton area offers a private four-year college in North Newton.
Bethel College's approximately 506 students come from 28 states and 17 countries and represent 37 religious denominations. Known for its tradition of academic excellence, Bethel ranks first among colleges in Kansas in the percentage of graduates who earn doctorates.
