Newton area residents have access to full medical, dental and rehabilitative services within a short distance from their home. Harvey County enjoys the third highest physician/resident ratio in the state. Newton is served by Newton Medical Center, a private, not-for-profit hospital, is very community and family oriented. Newton Medical Center offers an array of health care, diagnostic and support services to care for families. There are eight specialty nursing units including a "Level II", or special care nursery. This Level II designation means that, in many cases, newborns with health problems may remain at Newton Medical Center as opposed to being transferred to Wichita. The emergency department is fully-staffed 24 hours a day. With 67 physicians and almost 400 employees, the medical center is a major employer in Harvey County. The medical center is in an attractive facility located on a growing medical campus on Newton's south side. The facility is designed to meet the challenge of today's changing health care system while planning for the future. In addition, NMC has an annual equipment budget of about $1 million to upgrade and purchase new equipment, enabling the medical center to maintain a very modern facility. The Newton area is served by three more private medical clinics located within the community, Newton Professional Center, Preferred Medical Associates Axtell Clinic and Wichita Clinic Bethel. Prairie View Hospital in Newton, offers a complete range of psychiatric and chemical dependency services for children, adolescents, adults and older adults. Outpatient services are available in Marion, McPherson, Newton and Wichita. A state-accredited special purpose school, a partial hospital and inpatient hospital are located in Newton. Employee assistance programs and capitated contracting for business and industry are also available. Founded by the Mennonite churches in 1954, Prairie View is private and not-for-profit.
