On September 27, 2005 The Newton/North Newton Historic Preservation Commission received funding for a project titled: "Newton, Kansas and the Railroad People's Work, Housing, Religion, and Architecture" The project goal is to increase the understanding of Newton/North Newton railroad residents, focusing on housing, religion, work, railroad, and architecture. A secondary goal is to examine experiences through the lens of Anglo, African Americans, and Mexican/Hispanic populations, focusing on monuments and buildings, churches, and worker housing, for all workers, through oral interviews using audiotape recording. The commission has completed the interviews and is working to put the information together.
You can read what The Newton Kansan wrote about our grant on January 19, 2006 titled, "Preserving Stories One At A Time".
We intend to have a summary of these interviews available online in April 2007. You may also email billijo@thenewtonchamber.org for information regarding this project.
